Texture Mapped Objects VS. Flat Shaded Objects

This image illustrates the difference between texture mapped objects (image #2) and flat shaded/colored objects (image #1).  Although both images appear to be an image of a 3D tank, they are very different.  Image #2 is simply a texture mapped object that uses color on its surface to create texture.  Image #1 is only able to display shadowing, which makes it look less realistic.
